1220. Acri, Regno di Gerusalemme. Il cadavere di un giovane frate giace, orribilmente seviziato, ai piedi della cittadella degli Ospitalieri. Il priore dell'ordine, Enrico, incarica Bonaventura da Iseo, il geniale alchimista francescano appena giunto in città, di indagare su quanto è accaduto. Ben presto il frate comprenderà che dietro a quel delitto c'è la mano di un'antica setta, forse la stessa che ha tentato di ucciderlo in Italia.

Burgos. Castiglia del nord. Il corpo straziato di una monaca viene trovato nel chiostro del monastero di Las Huelgas. Del delitto è accusata Fleur d'Annecy, una ragazza dall'oscuro passato, rifugiatasi lì con il figlio Ruggero. Il francescano Bonaventura da Iseo, noto alchimista, è chiamato dalla badessa a fare luce sull'accaduto. Se Fleur sostiene che l'assassino è un uomo misterioso, avvolto in un mantello rosso fuoco, Magnus, il terribile monaco inquisitore, è di tutt'altro avviso: è la ragazza, che ha evocato un demone nel monastero, la colpevole.

Als wäre es damit nicht genug: Eines Tages verschwindet Valentino, der Poldi in Haus und Garten ausgeholfen hat, spurlos. Ist er etwa in die Fänge der Mafia geraten?

Still relishing the notoriety from her spectacular resolution of the Candela case, Poldi is alive to the faintest whiff of criminality. What to others might seem a series of misfortunes - the water supply cut off, a poisoned dog - is clearly, to Poldi, an escalation: the Mafia have had her in their sights ever since she solved Valentino's murder. Poldi has tasted blood. No-one is above suspicion. And trouble will surely follow....
