Phil Winter is a retired graphic designer with a passion for storytelling and a heart for helping children. Raised in Central California, Phil has lived across the western U.S. — from the mountains of Montana and Colorado to the beaches of Maui — and now resides in Henderson, Nevada, just outside Las Vegas. A self-described political nerd, Phil has had dozens of letters to the editor published in newspapers across the country, including the San Diego Union-Tribune, The Maui News, Las Vegas Review-Journal, and even The Wall Street Journal. His thought-provoking letters have often sparked responses from elected officials — along with plenty of amusement from his friends. Phil’s biggest passion is mentoring children facing challenges. Over the years, he’s served as a Big Brother, a foster parent, and an adoptive parent. Today, he continues that work through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada. Writing has become his favorite outlet in retirement — especially during hot Las Vegas summers. His first storybook, "The Chang Brothers and the Mystery at La Perouse Bay", was inspired by his two adventurous young Maui neighbors, who also helped create their detective aliases, Kai and Koa, for the storybook. In 2025, Phil launched "Curiosity Quest", an educational adventure series for kids seven and up. These fun, engaging booklets blend storytelling with learning — each one taking young readers on a time-travel journey through history. A world traveler who prefers cruise ships to planes, Phil is always up for pizza with friends, spontaneous adventures, and big belly laughs. His motto? Stay curious, keep exploring, and never stop asking: “What if?”
