“Nicholas Dealy has deftly brought to life the chaos and comedy of Gilded Age New Jersey politics with his biography of Lawrence Fagan. He has intertwined Fagan’s life and career with many larger themes from American history during this period. History buffs and those interested in New Jersey politics will find Dealy’s book fascinating.” —Vincent J. Cannato, professor of history, University of Massachusetts Boston “Impressively well written, organized and presented, ‘Fagan of Hoboken & The Horseshoe: In a gilded, manly age of disorderly industrial Armageddon and progressive urban reform’ is the colorfully informative biography of a remarkable man and the world he lived in….A unique and highly recommended pick.” –Midwest Book Review: Small Press Bookwatch (Reviewer’s Choice), January 2026. Nicholas Fagan Dealy holds a master’s degree in history from Salem State University and a master’s degree in education from the University of Massachusetts Boston.
