Following graduation from the University of Notre Dame, Mike spent several years working as a construction laborer, truck driver, and dock worker. His days as a laborer trying to get into medical school are chronicled in BLUE COLLAR, BLUE SCRUBS. His years as a surgical resident at the Mayo Clinic, where he was an inveterate moonlighter in rural Minnesota emergency rooms, are the subject of HOT LIGHTS, COLD STEEL.

Mike’s third book, ALL BLEEDING STOPS, tells the story of Matthew Barrett, idealistic young combat surgeon in the Vietnam War whose care and compassion eventually overwhelm him.

Mike's fourth book, THE SHIELING, follows David Carroll, a wrongly accused doctor running from both the FBI and the Russian mob. David hides in a shieling--a remote shepherd's hut--in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland where he meets Catriona Gordon, an anthropologist. Together, David and Catriona face a final reckoning as the Russian mob closes in.

Interestingly, Mike published two books at the same time in the summer of 2026. The first, fiction, is THE LEAST OF MEN, a sequel to THE SHIELING. It continues the story of David and Catriona as they face a new threat from a mysterious and unscrupulous woman who seems intent on destroying them.

The second book published in 2026 is RETIRED GROUND, A CLIMBER'S ODYSSEY. Based on a travel journal Mike kept for over fifty years, it chronicles the spiritual transformation he experienced over the many years he spent climbing mountains.
