Michael J. Edmond studied film before concluding that Hollywood would demand his soul and, worse, final cut. He turned to novels instead — where the only limits to worldbuilding are page count and caffeine, and the author retains creative control.

He holds a master's degree in creative writing, which now occupies a place of honor on his wall, and spent time in journalism before discovering that inventing things was considerably more satisfying than transcribing them.

Edmond is vastly outnumbered by daughters — his fiercest and most reliable critics, who are quick to inform him when no real woman would ever say or do what he just wrote, citing themselves as proof. Between them they bake cookies, rebuild engines, weld sculptures, master martial arts, hit bullseyes, read romance novels, play piano, get speeding tickets, and bounce babies on their knees. They are the reason his female characters tend to contain multitudes.

He writes across genres — clean YA fantasy, adult epic fantasy, and literary fiction — always with an eye toward characters who carry real moral weight and stories that take their readers seriously.
