If you are a parent, caregiver or teacher, the chances are that at some stage you are likely to have been concerned about the mental health and well-being of children and young people you support. You won’t be alone. To help you navigate this important topic, Dr Meinou Simmons, also known as ‘Dr May’, an experienced child and adolescent psychiatrist working in the NHS in Oxford, UK, and mother of three, has written a helpful question-and-answer book aimed at parents, caregivers and teachers. Meinou was born and raised in Manchester, UK, and studied to be a doctor at the University of Cambridge and then trained in postgraduate psychiatry in Cambridge-based rotations where she worked for a variety of mental health services. While based in Cambridge, Meinou co-founded Cambridge University Psychiatry Society. During her training Meinou served for four years on the Royal College of Psychiatrists' national trainees' committee where she undertook a number of projects on mental health and training, including co-writing a book on audit for psychiatrists. Meinou also served for one year as the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Chair on the board of the European Federation of Psychiatric Trainees where she collaborated on various working groups including leading a study on child and adolescent psychiatry training across Europe. Meinou enjoys having an international perspective, travelling and learning about other health systems. After completing her training, Meinou spent some time in the Netherlands, where both her mother and her unusual name comes from. She then moved to Oxford in 2015 and has worked in both the Oxford City CAMHS Team and subsequently the Oxfordshire CAMHS Outreach Team. Meinou has a longstanding interest in education and was awarded a Masters in Medical Education from the University of Bedfordshire in 2011. Meinou has maintained an active interest in the teaching and training of medical students and trainees in psychiatry for many years. In January 2021 was appointed Training Programme Director for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry trainees in the Thames Valley region. With this book, Meinou hopes to bring her experience of education and training of doctors to a broader audience of parents, caregivers and teachers. A Guide to the Mental Health of Children and Young People: Q&A for Parents, Caregivers and Teachers looks at factors that can influence mental health in youngsters; how to strengthen relationships with children and young people; and explains each of the main types of mental health difficulties young people commonly struggle with, providing information about how to support them and how to get help. Realistic case examples are used to illustrate a range of mental health difficulties children and young people face.
