We've known for decades that things usually go poorly when we first handle new technologies. Workers end up on the short end of the stick, organizations spend way more money and time trying to figure the technology out, and society misses out on huge opportunities and can pay other dramatic intangible costs. But it's not always true - somewhere, someone is finding a much better way forward. They're just rare, and their solutions are incomplete. My research is focused on finding these positive needles in the negative haystack, and to do that I focus on work involving robotic systems (and these days that also means AI). In January 2018 I accepted an offer to join the Technology Management faculty at UC Santa Barbara. I am a Digital Fellow at Stanford and MIT. I completed my PhD at MIT Sloan in July 2017, I hold a Masters in Management Research from MIT and a B.A. in Philosophy from Bowdoin College. I also studied Jazz Performance at the Berklee School of Music in Boston. I live in Santa Barbara, CA with my wife Kristen.
