Mary Camarillo has a new novel forthcoming in September of 2027 titled "Three Byrds." It's a coming-of-age story about a young blues loving woman who discovers that her family narrative doesn't match up with the truth and goes on a journey to find out who she really is.

Mary is the author of two award-winning novels. Her debut, "The Lockhart Women", won the 2022 Indie Author Project Award for California Adult Fiction, the 2022 Willa Literary Award Finalist in Multiform Fiction, and the 2021 First Place Award in the Next Generation Indies for First Fiction. Awards for her second novel, "Those People Behind Us," include the 2024 IBPA Benjamin Franklin Awards Silver Winner in Fiction: General, the 2023 American Fiction Awards Finalist in General Fiction, and the 2023 Hawthorne Prize Shortlist. In 2025, she was a Linda Purdy Memorial Prize winner for poetry.

Mary's poems and short fiction have appeared in publications and anthologies such as The White Picket Fence, Women in a Golden State, The Ear, and the Sonora Review. She serves on the advisory boards of Citric Acid, An Orange County Literary Arts Quarterly, and LibroMobile, An Arts Cooperative and Bookstore in Santa Ana, California.

Mary had a long career with the postal service, which might be genetic---both her grandfathers were railway mail clerks. She sorted mail, sold stamps, worked in the accounting office, and went to night school, eventually earning a degree in business administration, a CPA license, and a Certificate in Internal Auditing. Although her family has lived in the Carolinas since the 1700s, Mary lives in Huntington Beach, California with her husband, who plays ukulele, and their terrorist cat Riley, who makes frequent appearances on Instagram.
