Martha's debut novel "Blind Eye" has won the 2024 New Mexico-Arizona Book Award for Fiction-Other. In 2023 Western Writers of American honored Martha with a Silver Spur Award for Best Contemporary Western Novel. Kirkus Reviews wrote about "Blind Eye": "This bruising story is less a murder mystery than an unflinching look at a culture and community." New Mexico Magazine chose it for their "What to Read this Month" column saying in part, "Burns crafts vividly compelling scenes that describe the danger of rural isolation and the laments of neighbors who too late regretted their own "blind eye" and collective failure to act." Martha's new novel "Across the Narrows" is a sweeping family saga, centered around a tragedy, that leaves little room for forgiveness. It was released by Atmosphere Press in early 2024. Kirkus Reviews wrote about "Across the Narrows": "Burns, a skillful wordsmith, has delivered an addictive read." A native of New Mexico, Martha was always a storyteller who embraced Albert Camus' theory that "fiction is the lie through which we tell the truth." She earned a Doctor of Letters with distinction from Drew University in Madison, New Jersey. She is at work on her third novel set in Aiea, Hawaii in the summer of 1985.
