Marla Sheiner is a Phoenix-based author and former communications executive whose work explores leadership through the lives of influential figures. She is the author of McCain’s Navy and co-author of Keeping the Beat, based on lessons from Count Basie and jazz vocalist Dennis Rowland. Sheiner is also the author of The Mingenback Chronicles: The Romance and Tragedy of Winning a Home in the West, which brings forward the voice and legacy of her grandfather, Carl F. Mingenback—a pioneering settler of the American Midwest and a formative leader in the mutual insurance industry. A two-time national president of NAMIC and the driving force behind the industry’s first Mutual Insurance Manual (1906), Mingenback helped shape a movement grounded in shared risk, community responsibility, and policyholder ownership. Through her work, Sheiner connects his early experiences on the land to the values that continue to define mutual insurance today. Across her writing, Sheiner highlights a unifying theme: leadership is not declared, but demonstrated—through character, discipline, and the ability to guide others by example.
