Mario Cartaya was born in 1951 in Havana, Cuba. Nine years later he was forced to flee into exile in the United States–-a result of the imposition of Fidel Castro’s regime on the island. There, he fulfilled his early childhood dream of becoming an architect and in 1979 founded a 43-year-long, and highly acclaimed, architectural firm in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. In 2019, his life’s story and numerous award-winning architectural designs were read into the United States Congressional Record of the US House of Representatives; forever enshrined into the United States Library of Congress. In September 2022, the US House of Representatives flew an American flag over the United States Capitol in recognition of his many contributions to the betterment of our country and presented it to Mario during a ceremony held in the Congressional Members Only Reading Room of the US Library of Congress.

In 2022, Mario retired from the architectural firm he founded to focus on his literary career. With the same passion, dedication to excellence, and commitment that helped him become a successful architect and acclaimed American citizen, Mario has now turned his attention to writing books meant to inspire us all. His initial book, Journey Back Into The Vault: In Search on my Faded Cuban Childhood Footprints will make you experience a rollercoaster of emotions as you dream, laugh, sigh, and cry with him throughout his journey. It will also inspire you to enter your own subconscious in search of clarity of mind and inner peace—a transformative journey for healing. It is a book for our times—the realization that inner peace begins with us. Mario's book, La Bóveda: En busca de mi niñez cubana is the Spanish language telling of this same transformative journey.

Mario Cartaya’s career as an author has been highly rewarding. Journey Back Into The Vault: In Search of my Faded Cuban Childhood Footprints won the 2025 Pencraft Nonfiction Autobiography Award, the 2025 International BREW Nonfiction Book of Excellence Award—Autobiography of the Year, the 2025 Book Nomad Tales Five Stars Award, the 2024 American Writing Award—Nonfiction Travel, and the 2025 Memory and Meaning Award. His literary craftmanship has been featured on numerous television, radio, magazine, and podcast media outlets including Univision, PBS, and The World’s Best Magazine. Mario has also contributed as a featured guest speaker at various US universities and book festivals, inspiring all with his humanist values.
