Maria Valente was born, bred and educated all within a 10- mile radius in Westchester County, NY. She grew up the youngest of 5 girls in a home built by her father in 1950 which is still in the family today. As a teen she was diagnosed with scoliosis, since corrected by 2 long, painful surgeries followed by months of physical therapy. This experience led to an appreciation of the struggles of people with physical disabilities. Her creativity and skill as a writer were always praised, but she struggled in school despite her best efforts. A receptive learning disorder was not diagnosed until she was in her late 20s. This was a relief and explained why she had struggled so much as a young person in school and spurred her on to accomplish more. She applied and was accepted to law school where she studied environmental law. Law was not her love. She graduated, but never practiced. Her many jobs in fields such as real estate, office management and computer training were still not her real love. Her dream was to one day open her own chocolate shop and to finally write a book. Many more setbacks and hardships tried to defeat her, but she kept on the course. She began this book in 1999 and the bulk of it was written at that time. It took a pandemic to finally get it published in 2020. She has owned her successful chocolate shop, Chocolations, in Mamaroneck, NY since 2006, and this is her first novel.
