Margie Porter was born in West Texas and went to school in Dallas. Then she married a Yankee. (Not her fault. Jay Porter was and still is, the only man on the planet, but he wants to live in Indiana, north of the Mason-Dixon line.) In the 1970's she began freelancing for the local Tipton Tribune and was assigned the farm beat. This was awkward, because she was in farm country, a universe away from Dallas city streets, and she had never seen a real pig. And when sent to find an interviewee who was out "plowing the southwest 40," she could only respond, "Will you point?" Forced to learn about agriculture, Margie gained finely honed research skills. These paid off later when her supermarket job placed her in charge of their tobacco shop and almost $100,000 worth of premium hand-rolled cigars. Margie had never smoked, but she knew how to research and she had an understanding of what various soils and climates do to a crop. She educated herself and broke state sales records. Later, placed in charge of the wine department, she did the same thing; she did not drink alcohol. Margie initially saw herself as a humorist and possibly a children's book writer. Fascination with crime probably emerged from being married to a family of morticians. Then her mother married a man who appeared to be the criminal type. He was extremely controlling, probably abusive, and in 2002, her mother died from starvation. There was no justice. The husband was a wealthy and powerful man with a litany of "reasonable excuses" for his wife's death. The anger still burned when Indianapolis Special Crimes Prosecutor Larry Sells sat in her writers' group and told stories about some of the hideous murderers he had convicted. One of the stories was about Cynthia Albrecht, a brave and daring young woman who made a joyful life for herself on the IndyCar circuit. Then she was murdered. Given the opportunity to write Cindy's story, Margie polished off her research skills and teamed up with Sells to write "Race to Justice." She will forever feel honored to have written this story.
