A U.S. Navy veteran who served in the Philippines and Vietnam, Fortner has spent a lifetime around aircraft, boats, back roads, and the kinds of people who tend to make good stories. His novels draw readers into a world of sunlit islands, dangerous waters, hidden motives, and sudden violence, where paradise is rarely as peaceful as it looks.

Now living in Florida, Fortner continues to explore the coastal towns, marinas, islands, and out-of-the-way places that inspire his fiction. His travels have taken him from the Florida Keys and Caribbean to mountain roads and small towns across America, often providing the settings and ideas for his next adventure.

When he isn’t writing, Fortner enjoys traveling with his wife, playing golf, walking, and taking the long way home whenever the scenery looks interesting. For him, every unfamiliar road, quiet harbor, and tropical island holds the possibility of another story.
