She is a certified Senior Ecologist and Professional Certified Wetland Scientist. As a first responder to the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill, Schuman witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of human error on fragile ecosystems—an experience that fuels the heart and tension of her fiction. Now based in Port Townsend, Washington, she volunteers with the Marine Science Center, the Northwest Maritime Center, and A Humane World for Animals.
