Luis Portero spent more than four decades in publishing before writing a word of fiction. Over a 42-year career at Elsevier, the world's largest scientific publisher, he was a senior executive, working alongside researchers, physicians, and editors on several continents. He is now the Publisher at Hatshepsut Publishing, an independent house on Long Island's north shore.

The Forgotten, his debut thriller, grew out of two lifelong fascinations: the unfinished business of art looted during the Second World War and the quiet harbor towns of Long Island's north shore, where the novel is set and where Portero has lived for decades. He wanted to write the kind of story he has always loved to read, one where history refuses to stay buried and an ordinary neighborhood turns out to be hiding an extraordinary man.

When he isn't writing, Portero is a lifelong stamp collector, a longtime martial artist, and an occasional painter. He lives on the North Shore of Long Island, a short walk from the streets Walter Henry calls home. The Forgotten is the first book in a planned series.
