Linda and John were blessed with two wonderful children, and life progressed as they assumed it would—until it didn’t. At 25 years old, their daughter Emilee, a bright, compassionate, respected Doctor of Pharmacy, was diagnosed with anorexia nervosa, which has the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric illness outside of opioid addiction. Their book won two International Impact Book Awards in the categories of Biography and Health. Spreading awareness and education for communities and compassion for individuals who suffer from anorexia, eating disorders, alcohol and substance use disorders, and mental illnesses has become their passion. They created and host the eating disorder and mental health podcast, "Once Shattered: Picking up the Pieces." In 2022, they founded "The Emilee Connection Inc." a nonprofit whose mission is raising awareness, expanding education, providing peer support, and social connection for adults with eating disorders and their loved ones. They speak at conferences, schools, and colleges. In July 2023, Linda and John were invited to the White House for President Biden’s speech, “Expanding Access to Mental Health Care." They hope people, insurance companies, and Congress will recognize that critical comprehensive care and a supportive, compassionate community are essential for those who struggle with all psychiatric illnesses. These supports are vital to the health of our families, our communities, and our future as a nation.
