I began my professional career as a mechanical engineer after graduating from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Science Degree. My wild imagination naturally feeds my love for mechanical design, and the combination has allowed me to secure multiple US Patents in the field of robotics. I enjoy writing in several genre, but my current focus is on science fiction. I've entered several of my works into the Writers of the Future Contest and have been lucky enough to receive multiple honorable mentions, as well as semifinalist status for my novella The Emporium, which also received first place in the unpublished novella category of the Florida Writers Association's, 2011 Royal Palm Literary Awards. The Emporium is currently available in Samie Sands' anthology, Swallowed by The Beast. Samie also published my short story, Sole Survivor in her anthology, A Picture is Worth 1000 Words. I have three short works published in the anthology, Aspiring Writers 2014 Winners Anthology. My latest short story, Shoot Him Daddy, was publisher by Metasaga Press in their 2016 anthology, Furturistica Volume 1. My short story, That Last Summer, was published in 2015 online in the literary journal Red Truck Review, Journal 3. It was my first attempt to comply with one of the lessons they preached at my first writers conference, "Write what you know." That Last Summer is a fictionalized memoir about an adventure my buddies and I had one summer on the Combahee River near Beaufort, South Carolina. We were teenagers, so I had nearly forgotten the story until I started writing it. I say it's fictionalized, because I'm no longer really sure how much of it is absolutely true, although I guess that doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things. It feels real, and it was a blast to write. Last year I found my great-uncles manuscript from 1938. I read a few pages and liked it so much, I type up the entire novel and published it for him. That Boyce Girl is refreshing trip back through 1938, an enjoyable read in ever way. I enjoyed it so much, and have received so much interest, I've started writing the sequel. I recently completed two sci-fi novels: Outpost Earth and Alien Rendezvous. Both have been placed with publishers for release in 2017. I have a tendency to jump right into things, so my first attempt at writing was a novel called TLS Titan. Curious as to why it was not quickly picked up by a publisher, I joined the Florida Writers Association and attended the first available writer's conference. It was painful, but I quickly understood why the manuscript did not sell, and that was simply because it stunk, in every possible way. It's funny how little you need to learn to realize there's a great deal you don't know. I enjoy the length of a novella because it gives me enough room to develop my characters and plot in detail, while still being short enough to write, edit, re-edit, and read in a reasonable amount of time. Novellas, however, are hard to place in the market; they're too long for most magazines and too short to publish as a stand-alone traditional book. I think the e-book might just bring the novella back to the forefront of publishing. We can hope.
