She is also a field archaeologist and has co-directed major projects excavating the lives of working Romans, principally in Italy. Bowes' work has been supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Science Foundation, the Guggenheim Foundation, the Loeb Foundation and the Packard Humanities Institute.
