After graduating from St. Anne's College, Oxford in 1992 with a degree in Biochemistry, Kersten Hall worked as a molecular biologist for a number of years during which time he developed a growing interest in the historical emergence of this powerful branch of science. His book 'The Man in the Monkeynut Coat', which was featured on a 'Books of 2014' list in 'The Guardian' newspaper and was shortlisted for the 2015 British Society for History of Science Dingle Prize, tells the story of one of the founders of molecular biology, the pioneering scientist William Astbury who, through his X-ray studies of wool fibres for the textile industries of West Yorkshire came to play a role in one of the biggest scientific discoveries in history and whose importance in this story has long been overlooked.
