Kelly Schmutte is a designer, educator, and entrepreneur. Her career at Stanford's Hasso Plattner Institute of Design ("the d.school") has focused on designing learning experiences with lasting impact, including reimagining the future of higher education (Stanford 2025), creating a purpose-based toolkit for high schoolers (Project Wayfinder), building out the d.school’s Navigating Ambiguity curriculum and resource library, and most recently, leading the charge in evolving Stanford’s design degree programs. Kelly also teaches core d.school classes and foundational Product Design classes in Stanford’s Mechanical Engineering Design Group alongside d.school founder David Kelley.  Kelly has always had a passion for creating and making. She studied Product Design at Stanford (BS ‘06, MS ‘13), where she first applied her creative energy toward her lifelong curiosity of improving the experience of dancing en pointe for ballet dancers. She and her start-up, PerfectFit Pointe, have been featured in the New York Times, and are on a mission to save the toes of dancers around the world. She loves bright colors, watercolor painting, and long hikes to remote mountaintops.
