I love to write, but it wasn't until I retired that I put my heart--and backside--into becoming a writer. My debut novel, Elizabeth's Landing, springs from my enthusiasm for children's literature and my experience fighting to save a local creek. My concern for the creek led me back to college. I graduated at age 42 and ran a leading California Resource Conservation District for seven years. We helped farmers and ranchers restore and manage lands to bring back native plants, birds, insects, and all sorts of animals. Now "retired," I live, write, and learn lots of cool stuff on California's North Coast. Elizabeth's Landing is proof. Though drawn to sea turtles, I knew little about efforts to protect them, nothing about shrimping, nor the Texas Gulf coast when I hatched the story idea and began putting words on the page. Diane Wilson, fourth generation shrimper and social activist, helped me understand and write about shrimp fishing. She recently referred to me as bull-headed in my persistence with the book--taking time and effort to get things right. All the work paid off. To my delight, Elizabeth's Landing has earned four indie book awards. I volunteer for the Mendocino Coast Writers Conference, the Point Cabrillo Light Station State Historic Park, and write occasional history articles for our Kelley House Museum. I love to draw and make art, take photographs, and dig into my family's history. An ex-caterer, I have a deep fondness for good food. Just ask Elizabeth's grandma. Every day, curiosity between my ears, camera in my pocket, my writer husband and I walk in nature. I'm known to talk to local tree frogs, hummingbirds, turkeys, and sometimes coyotes.
