The oldest of 10 children raised in a strict Catholic family, Kathi was often saddled with caring for her siblings, expected to set the example and earn exemplary grades. Her linguistic skills in English and Spanish surfaced in high school earning her an academic achievement award. Enrolled in college while attending high school, her mother had ambitious goals for Kathi as an interpreter for the United Nations, while Kathi’s dream was to become a psychologist or teacher. All dreams were shattered, and the trajectory of her life derailed, when, at the age of 17, her parents were killed by a drunk driver. The once innocent wallflower turned wannabe hippie, suffered from depression, debilitating panic attacks, and had a child out of wedlock at 20. Desperate to provide for her daughter, she was the first girl in a class of seven to graduate from a computer programming trade school in 1972 - before computers were a household name and the glass ceiling was alive and well. Rejected by every company hiring computer programmers, she aced the civil service test for IRS and began a 35-year tenure in upper management. Her birth order and struggle to survive as an orphan laid the foundation for many leadership roles such as President of a homeowner’s association and Regent for Court Daughter’s of Divine Mercy. Her volunteer positions often involve children - The Boys and Girls Club, Rescue the Children, mentor for underprivileged high school students, and Sunday School teacher. Retired in 2009, she felt divinely inspired to tell her story. It took 12 years to complete her book.
