Karen Healey was born in Whangarei, New Zealand in 1981. Now she lives in Ōtautahi (Christchurch), New Zealand, where she jars stubborn scenes loose by wandering along the river. She writes science fiction, fantasy and magical romance for young adults and adults. Karen’s novels include the When We Wake duology, Guardian of the Dead, and The Empress of Timbra (co-authored with Robyn Fleming). Most recently, she has published Bespoke and Bespelled, the first novella in the Wellywood Magic series, and Persephone in Bloom (under the pen name Kate Healey), a workplace romantic comedy inspired by Greek mythology, and the first in the Olympus Inc. series. Karen is an Aurealis and Sir Julius Vogel award winner, and has been a finalist for the ALA Morris Award, the NZ Book Awards for Children and Young Adults, and the Andre Norton Award, among others. In 2017 she was an Ursula Bethell Writer-In-Residence at the University of Canterbury, her alma mater.
