Forthcoming from Sibylline Press, Fall 2023, is THE BEREAVED, about a widowed mother whose children are sent out on the Orphan Train during the Civil War, and how she tries to get them back again. The novel is based on the true story of my third great-grandmother. I'm the author of three other novels, two women's history compilations and a collection of poetry. I was Poet Laureate of Alameda, CA, from 2014-2017. My essays and reporting have appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle, Huffington Post, Salon, Good Housekeeping, Redbook, Narratively, Scary Mommy and Thrillist. My poems have appeared most recently in Carmina, Hecate, Autumn House Review, Sledgehammer, California Quarterly, Magpie Review, Wingless Dreamer, Sugared Water, Tiferet, and more. I live with my husband, cats, dog, and bees in a restored Victorian at the edge of town. I love hot summers, occasional snow days, history, and the library.
