Juano’s memoir Slum Boy is raw, reflective and quietly remarkable. It’s a story of survival, identity and art – from the care system in Glasgow to some of the world’s most prestigious galleries. Born in Glasgow in 1977, Juano never knew his father beyond a name on his birth certificate. His mother was an addict who frequently abandoned him. He was taken into care at the age of four. What followed was a childhood marked by instability – but also a growing sense of creativity, shaped by visits to Kelvingrove Art Gallery, which offered escape. He now lives in Wiltshire with his partner David and their son. Over the past two decades, Juano has built an international career as an artist. His work – a striking blend of photography and paint – has been shown at the Museum of Modern Art and the Leslie-Lohman Museum in New York. He’s collaborated with Gilbert & George, David LaChapelle and been sought out by icons like Grace Jones and Madonna. His journey hasn’t been smooth. Rejected from art school in Scotland, he moved to Paris where he modeled for Thierry Mugler and Pierre et Gilles. Slum Boy began as a private project – a way to process trauma, guided by the difficult details in 200 pages of social work records. But when Andrew O’Hagan read an early draft, he sent it to a publisher. The result is a memoir that’s moving, funny, angry, beautiful – and impossible to ignore.
