John is a Senior Fellow at the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL) in Greensboro, NC, where he is responsible for the research and development of leadership assessments.

Since joining the Center, John has worked as a research associate, research scientist, and group director. As director of psychometrics, he was responsible for the research on 360-degree feedback instruments.

John has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and several book chapters on 360-degree feedback and related topics. He is a co-author of five books on 360-degree feedback: Using 360-degree Feedback in Organizations (1997); Choosing 360: A Guide to Evaluating Multi-rater Feedback Instruments for Management Development (1997); Feedback to Managers: A Review and Comparison of Multi-Rater Instruments for Management Development (1998); The Handbook of Strategic 360 Feedback (2019); and, Leveraging the Impact of 360-degree Feedback (2020).

John is co-author of two articles that were selected as the best papers of the year by the Human Resources Division of the Academy of Management (1998) and Personnel Psychology (2017). Additionally, John received a Distinguished Reviewer Award from the Buros Institute of Mental Measurements in 2005. He serves on the editorial boards of Leadership Quarterly, Journal of Business and Psychology, and Human Resource Management and is the former book review editor of Personnel Psychology. John is a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP).

John's PhD is in industrial and organizational (I-O) psychology from North Carolina State University, where he served as an adjunct associate professor of psychology for several years.
