For more than three decades, John has helped people communicate better, connect more deeply, and understand one another across differences. A retired professor of interpersonal communication, he taught for over 32 years at the University of Washington and later served as Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Dubuque. In his 2023 book, Dismantling Racism One on One: Uniqueness, Narrative, Equity, John offers a practical and deeply human approach to diversity, equity, and inclusion, showing how real change often begins with honest, one-on-one conversations and the sharing of personal stories. His earlier book, Personal Communicating and Racial Equity, provides a clear step-by-step framework for building authentic relationships that move beyond stereotypes. In U&Me: Communicating in Moments That Matter, he shares practical skills for strengthening relationships, developing emotional intelligence, and navigating life’s important conversations with greater confidence and care. John also edited multiple editions of the widely used textbook Bridges Not Walls: A Book About Interpersonal Communication and coauthored Together: Communicating Interpersonally. Above all, John believes meaningful connection happens person to person. His work focuses on interpersonal communication, racial equity, diversity and inclusion, and the everyday power of human relationships. John lives in Iowa with his wife, Becky. When he’s not writing or teaching, he enjoys reading, cooking, and spending time on the water.
