John is a retired professor of interpersonal communication, having taught for 32 years at the University of Washington. He also served as Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Dubuque. His most recent work, Dismantling Racism One on One: Uniqueness, Narrative, Equity (2023), offers a unique approach to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) by focusing on interpersonal, rather than systemic, racism. In 2017, John published Personal Communicating and Racial Equity: A Humane Technology for Developing Anti-Stereotyping Relationships with People Who Are Different from You (Revised Edition). This book outlines nine practical steps to achieve the interpersonal goals outlined in the title. His earlier work, U&Me: Communicating in Moments That Matter (New and Revised Edition, 2014), emphasizes the value of personal communication and offers specific skills for creating meaningful connections with others. Additionally, John edited 11 editions of Bridges Not Walls: A Book About Interpersonal Communication and coauthored Together: Communicating Interpersonally. John resides in Iowa with his wife, Becky, and enjoys reading, cooking, and watersports.
