It's a collection of articles from the "Stonewall Strong" blog on resilience I have been writing for Psychology Today since the 2017 publication of my book STONEWALL STRONG: GAY MEN'S HEROIC FIGHT FOR RESILIENCE, GOOD HEALTH, AND A STRONG COMMUNITY. Based on my personal story and nearly 100 interviews across the US, STONEWALL STRONG is the first book by a health journalist to examine gay men's amazing resilience and offer lessons for anyone who wants to be resilient. It continues to warm my heart the way so many people of all ages--from little kids to folks in their nineties--have told me how much they love my children’s book WILHELMINA GOES WANDERING. This is why I describe it as a “fable for kids ages 5 to 105." Based on a true story, Wilhelmina the runaway cow in Connecticut travels with a herd of deer for five months. In my reimagined story, Wilhelmina learns valuable lessons about accepting herself as the free spirit she is when she finds acceptance by her deer friends and eventually by Betty, the kind Scottish farmer who adopts Wilhelmina. My proudest personal achievement was my 1999 book VICTORY DEFERRED: HOW AIDS CHANGED GAY LIFE IN AMERICA. Published by the University of Chicago Press, VICTORY DEFERRED draws from hundreds of original interviews to tell the story--stories, really--of how a deadly public health crisis propelled an unpopular minority of Americans to organize in a way they never had done before, and to demand resources to address the epidemic while fighting for equal rights too. All of the interviews, correspondence, and research materials I used to develop VICTORY DEFERRED are part of the "John-Manuel Andriote VICTORY DEFERRED Collection" at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History in Washington, DC. On a lighter note, my 2001 book HOT STUFF: A BRIEF HISTORY OF DISCO offers a "serious look at a fun subject," as my editor at Harper Entertainment put it. I updated and expanded the book as an ebook-only release re-titled HOT STUFF: A BRIEF HISTORY OF DISCO/DANCE MUSIC. Since my first book review was published in the Advocate in 1983, I have written for magazines and newspapers across the US, including The Atlantic, AARP Bulletin, and The Washington Post. As you can see, I have a variety of interests and a strong passion for learning from history. I also feel a strong sense of pride as a journalist in always striving to get the facts right, and to rely on good storytelling--rather than fictional liberties--to tell compelling stories that offer an engaging read and food for thought too.
