John Douglas Fisher, born into an air force family that resulted in repeated moves all over the UK. After 17 schools he began to wonder if his mum was a getaway driver. During his school career he was thrown out of some of the best schools in England. At the age of 16 he signed on for twelve years in the air force, which turned out to be a huge mistake. He convinced air force doctors that he took orders to go absent without leave from alien voices over the horizon. This terminated his service very suddenly. He became a rock drummer, founded a model agency, and later an electronics company and then got business qualifications. Restless, he left England in a beat-up car loaded with a sleeping bag and enough tins of baked beans to last three months. He headed for Milan to teach English for less than the minimum wage and engaged in artistic things like existing on one meal a day and living in a very cheap Pensione that turned out to be a brothel. The exclusive school and its ultra-rich students introduced him to other dark characters in Italy and doing business Italian style. He developed a student travel company which expanded throughout Europe and during this time got his flying license and a plane and started a small charter business. He decided to walk the Camino in 2015. This gave him the idea of the story for Fatal Camino. He has made his home in Portugal, where he plans future stories drawing on his flying, teaching, and various business experiences. Here is how he describes his way to Fatal Camino: 'I had the idea to walk the Camino after I met an acquaintance who had walked "The Way" twice. I wanted to get away from my daily situation and made my plans. A friend gave me a detailed Camino map as a Christmas present. I love maps and spent hours poring over the route. Barely visible little crosses along trail awoke my curiosity. I thought they were churches, but no, on checking with the map legend, they were labelled "Way Crosses." They reminded me of graves by the side of the trail. Why would people be buried there? This triggered off my "what if" thinking mode. From this, the story idea formed and became a series of questions and answers of who, what, why, and when? In a short time, the story was born in my head and down as notes. Suddenly, my upcoming Camino had a new perspective. Not only to find peace but check out locations! I followed the route on Google maps and sought out locations and cyber walked the trail. Five months later, I was walking and doing both, relaxing, befriending other pilgrims and visiting locations which was quite a wow experience. I was accompanied in part by the characters Jane and Dan in my head. They were joined Comissario Mendoza and then by Sugar and Mommy. In their differing ways, they were a sort of company. I had mental conversations with them. I mimicked them talking to one another, which got me a few strange looks from fellow pilgrims. Some of the happiest moments in my Camino are transferred to some of the characters between the pages of the book. Ex-pilgrims who have read Fatal Camino said it took them back and completely re-immersed them in their experiences. Other readers told me they felt they had actually been there. The physical experience was as rewarding as seeing the final printed copy.'
