John Bowman is a Senior Director and Pastor at Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas. He has spent his life developing leaders and empowering volunteers. From swim coach in high school to developing leaders at one of the largest churches in America, John’s passionate focus is bringing out the best in others. He was the director of leadership and workforce development at a community college when he experienced a life altering change through his salvation and belief in Jesus as his Lord and Savior in late 2000. Immediately after, he was recruited by Development Dimensions International (DDI) and helped global corporations with their talent management. ● He assisted a national healthcare organization in reducing their turnover from 29% to 19% saving the company hundreds of millions of dollars ● After a major oil spill, he orchestrated a team to change the safety culture of a global oil company ● He helped several global organizations to develop their succession plans and hi-potential leadership pools including the selection of the next CEO for a fortune 500 company In January 2001, John and his family started attending Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas. In 2011, John was ordained as a Pastor at Lakewood Church and became the director of the Men’s Ministry. In 2013, he was asked to also oversee the Lakewood Internship Program, Leadership Development Program, LifeGroups, Single’s Ministry and Men’s Ministry. In 2017, he helped coordinate the response and recovery efforts to assist Lakewood members and volunteers following the deviation of Hurricane Harvey. In 2018, he was asked to transition the church’s programs assisting people experiencing life’s struggles and addictions. Out of this transition birthed the Freedom Ministry. He is the architect of Lakewood’s Freedom Program and Your Freedom Journey which was designed as a yearlong curriculum to help people experience inner freedom and purpose. It is impacting thousands of lives each year from around the world to change for the better. In 2024, he was asked to develop team leaders to respond proactively to help people in crisis recover following natural disasters. Most recently, John was Board Certified through the American Association of Christian Counselors (AACC) programs for Life and Mental Health Coaching. John is married to Laura and has two grown children, Brandon and Bianca.
