Joe Novello grew up in San Francisco, California. Joe purchased his first sailboat when he was 14 years old and spent most of his free time in during his high school years sailing in lakes and San Francisco Bay. Joe enlisted in the Coast Guard in February 1974 and entered boot camp the day after graduating in June of that year. Joe’s first assignment was as a permanent detail Assistant Company Commander at Training Center Alameda. In 1975 Joe was promoted to 3rd Class Petty Officer/ and transferred to Newport where he served as a coxswain aboard 36, 44, and 52 foot motor lifeboats. Joe married his high school sweetheart Peggy in 1977 and they remain married to this day, Joe and Peggy have two wonderful children. Joe worked in construction and emergency services for six year before attending Oregon State University where he graduated with a degree in Industrial Arts/Technology Education. He earned additional degrees from Oregon State and The University of Oregon while working a as a teacher and administrator in Lincoln County Schools for 30 years. Throughout his early career Joe stayed active in emergency services as an Emergency Medical Technician, Volunteer Firefighter, and Reserve Police Officer. Joe still works as a volunteer in Emergency Services. Joe continued his obsession with boats, building, purchasing and restoring dozens over the years. Joe is a certified sailing and kayaking instructor. He founded the Free Family Boating program at the Toledo Community Boathouse in Toledo Oregon. Joe has dabbled in writing and is just beginning to get serious with his first book: Master Chief McAdams, The Stories That Made the Legend.
