You never know how you will react in a situation until you are placed in it. As an independent woman in my 20's travelling around the world, acquiring a spinal cord injury resulting in paralysis and using a wheelchair for the rest of my life, I thought would have meant that life would be over. That was far from the truth and reality of it. While I have always enjoyed writing, I graduated the University of Michigan with a degree in English Literature, I never thought I would write a book. However, life gives us many surprises. Telling my story and sharing my experience has been cathartic, therapeutic and rewarding. Knowing that readers have been enlightened, educated and moved by my story has been an unexpected blessing. When graduating from university, I did not know what I wanted to do when I grew up. So, I spent the next few years after graduation working odd jobs and travelling around the world—Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Sub-Saharan Africa. In 1997 in Namibia, Africa, I acquired a spinal cord injury while sledding down a sand dune. I came to Grand Rapids, Michigan to do my spinal cord rehab at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital and have remained in Grand Rapids. I developed a career in fundraising and am a passionate advocate at heart. I am an avid traveller and enjoy reading, playing tennis, pickleball and serving on various boards in my community. People have asked if I am going to write another book. There is nothing in the hopper yet, but life has shown me that anything is possible. Motivational speaking is my next endeavor.
