Born just outside of Detroit, Michigan, the youngest of seven siblings, my family moved to Florida in 1979, just as I was turning six. From turmoil to madness, our family faced many challenges, leading to my parents' divorce when I was just 12. The journey ahead separated me from my mom and siblings; it was just me and my dad trekking forward. My dad was extremely hardworking, just as my loving mom was. We never appreciate our parents' sacrifice and effort enough. We never truly understand what they went through for us. Married at the young age of 20, with a stepson and a son on the way, it was an unpaved road leading to the unknown. Scraping by, working two jobs, with a third son now on the way, bringing our small family to five, I worked in restaurants while taking college courses, coaching baseball, and trying to lead my family. I made a jump to the noble profession of law enforcement in my mid-to-late 20s. My career as a law enforcement officer has been studious, courageous, and compelling. Still working in law enforcement for over 23 years, I was and am blessed to be involved in the community. All the accolades, awards, and accomplishments never took away the pain that life hands you. I am extremely accomplished in my career, but what about life? Over the course of my 20-plus-year marriage, I experienced cheating and deceit, leading to divorce. Through resilience, learning, and coping, I paved the way to become a better person inside and out. Success never matters if we are not our best internally. Each day holding myself accountable for my growth and life, I found my happiness, worth, and tenacity. It is not the hard work; it is not the effort; it's the discipline. It is what keeps us going that counts the most—discipline in routine. Tame your demons; fly with your angels. Now in my 50s, happily remarried and happily moving forward in my life, I found a foundation that created the architecture for my life that I want to pass on to others. Through police work, we learn we are only as strong as our community and each other. So why not make the world stronger through choice, opportunity, and quality habits? This book is my legacy. My kids, my grandkids, family, and friends will carry it further, stronger, and better. Be a beast.
