Maine farmer, author and itinerant Quaker minister, Jennifer Wixson is the creator of The Sovereign Series http://www.thesovereignseries.com/ a collection of five novels set in the mythical small town of Sovereign, Maine that highlight a rural, agricultural-based lifestyle. Sovereign (pop. 1,048) is noted for quirky and good-hearted characters who weave through the five books like good friends dropping in for a cup of tea. The first book in the series, "Hens and Chickens," (White Wave, Aug. 2012) follows the journey of two female friends, Lila and Rebecca, downsized by corporate America who move to Sovereign, Maine to raise chickens and sell organic eggs and discover more that they bargain for, including a wonderful world of giving and caring neighbors -- and romantic love. Book 2, "Peas, Beans & Corn," (White Wave, June 2013), relates the adventures of a National Guard veteran who returns home to Sovereign from the war in Afghanistan with the secret dream of restarting the town's old sweet corn canning factory. On the bus ride home he meets a young woman (Rebecca's daughter) who helps restart his tired heart, much to the dismay of both their mothers. In Book 3, "The Songbird of Sovereign" (White Wave, July 2014) readers learn the story of Miss Hastings, one of the series most popular characters. The novel, which moves from the 1940s to the present day, gives readers a poignant inside look at a sanatorium for the treatment of TB where a young Jana Hastings learns humility, grace, and the meaning of unconditional love. In Book 4 "The Minister's Daughter" (White Wave, Fall 2015) we learn why Nellie Walker, Minister Maggie's daughter, has a BIG chip on her shoulder and how her steadfast lover, Dr. Bart, helps Nellie overcome her angst and anger. In the fifth and final book in the series, "Maggie's Dilemma" (White Wave, Oct. 2017) Maggie the minister wrestles with her dark side--and with her relationship with two brothers--in order to find happiness at last and to bring the series to a close. Readers have described "Hens & Chickens" as "a modern-day Jane Austen romance," which is "impossible to put down." Wixson strives to bring her characters and the town of Sovereign to life, so much so that readers often feel that they are part of the story, themselves "sitting at the table in a coffee shop with good friends over a cup of coffee to catch up on their lives." Sober now nearly three decades, Wixson quit drinking in August of 1988. Her journey of recovery led her to Bangor Theological Seminary, from which she received a Master's of Divinity in 2001. Wixson was born on a dairy farm in Winslow, Maine, and currently lives in Troy, Maine where she keeps bees, gardens and raises Scottish Highland cattle with her husband, affectionately known as "the Cranberry Man."
