Jeanette Gower has been breeding Australian Stock Horses for over 55 years in South Australia under the Chalani prefix. Together with her daughter, Kim, the stud has enjoyed considerable success throughout Australia. Jeanette taught adult Equine Studies for 19 years and has written numerous articles for equine magazines. Jeanette's experience with dogs began at a young age. At just eight years old, she was attending obedience classes with her first Shetland Sheepdog. That early love for training and connection with all animals continued through life. She has bred an Australian Champion Shetland Sheepdog and raised a joyful variety of dogs over the years, including Italian Greyhounds, Cattle Dogs, retired Greyhounds, and a lively Dachshund or two. As a writer, she’s known for her clear, calm voice and her ability to make complex topics practical and readable. This background brings a grounded credibility to her work with animals and a steady hand to everything she writes. In 1999, she wrote the widely acclaimed book "Horse Colour Explained". Horses are her passion, and she shares that passion with her readers. In 2023, she published her next book, "The Thinking Horse Breeder"—a comprehensive guide to successful horse breeding. She saw a need for breeders to understand the art, science, tools, and business of responsible horse breeding. This book has received very favorable reviews and has sold in over 16 countries. Her third book, "The Rannock Legacy", tells the story of a remarkable horse, demonstrating her meticulous research and admiration for exceptional horses by compiling a history of the foundation Australian Stock Horse stallion Rannock, the Chalani stud, and the families that bred these outstanding horses. It is a personal and, at times, emotive story. This book is not only a journey through time, but it also provides essential insights along the way. In 2025, she published "Buy The Right Horse" - another of her straight-talking, practical step-by-step guides to foster better partnerships with our horses through better buying practices, one horse at a time. Her fifth book, "Homemade Dog Food Recipes", is now out. It draws upon her other love, dogs. With decades of hands-on experience raising animals and working closely with dogs of all breeds, Jeanette has developed a practical, balanced resource that can make healthy, home-prepared dog meals achievable for everyone.
