Janet Clark Shay is a freelance writer and the author of Growing Beyond Small Talk: Discover Practical Skills for Meaningful One-on-One Conversation and Overcome Personal Communication Insecurity. Born in Colorado, Janet spent most of her childhood in Redondo Beach, California, before graduating from high school in Kansas. She attended Fort Hays State University and Emporia State University, majoring in Education and minoring in Journalism. Her passion for creativity has led her down many paths, from decorative painting—studying faux finishes in Louisville, KY, and Trompe l’oeil at the American Academy of Decorative Arts in Scottsdale, AZ—to art instruction, where she taught youth for 15 years. Her first break in journalism came while she was still in high school, writing a column for her rural town’s weekly newspaper. Since then, her work has appeared in magazines, church performance programs, advertising projects, and even a children’s audiobook. She has also trained in advertising and graphic design, skills that complement her storytelling. Inspired by a desire to help others improve their conversational skills, she wrote Growing Beyond Small Talk to show that great communicators aren’t “born”—they’re made through learning, practice, and attentive listening. Janet is also the author of two inspirational biographies: The Prayer That Makes a Difference and This Side of Heaven: One Man’s Journey to Spiritual Sight, both of which highlight the power of prayer and the importance of a personal walk with Jesus Christ.
