Dr. James Lane is a nationally acclaimed education leader known for his transformative impact on schools and his commitment to developing the next generation of leaders. He has recently served as one of the leaders of K-12 initiatives at ETS and as the CEO of PDK International and Educators Rising. Dr. Lane also held pivotal roles at the U.S. Department of Education, including Delegated Assistant Secretary in the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education and Senior Advisor to the U.S. Secretary of Education. As Virginia’s 25th Superintendent of Public Instruction, he was appointed by the Governor of Virginia to lead critical statewide initiatives. Named Virginia Superintendent of the Year in 2017, Dr. Lane successfully led three school districts—Chesterfield, Goochland, and Middlesex Counties—to measurable success. His distinctive journey from award-winning band director—honored with induction into the Carolina Beach Music Hall of Fame—to national education leader gives him a unique perspective on driving school improvement. Dr. Lane holds degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University, as well as a doctorate from the University of Virginia. He specializes in cultivating cultures of academic optimism and equipping educators to transform student outcomes through strategic, visionary leadership.
