As a shortstop and second baseman, Jim hustled through the ranks of Peanut League, Little League, Pony League, American Legion ball, Chicago Shoreline ball, high school ball, and a brief stint in college ball. He even had an opportunity to play semi-pro baseball for nominal pay one summer. Although he was an above average player, Jim realized he wasn’t good enough for the big time or the major leagues. This acceptance redirected his life toward a different calling—medicine. In an ironic twist reminiscent of his favorite film, "Field of Dreams," where Moonlight Graham transitions from a baseball player to a dedicated physician, Jim found his path in the healing arts.
In his memoir, "Hey Doc: Memoirs of a Rural Family Physician," Dr. Damos opens the door to the often-overlooked world of small-town medicine. He candidly shares the triumphs and trials he faced, including his family's heartbreaking battles with childhood cancer and Alzheimer's disease.
