Born and raised in the small town of Brunswick, Georgia, Jim Paulk graduated from Glynn Academy there, attended the military school, North Georgia College, located in the mountains of Dahlonega, Georgia, and graduated in the Class of 1957 at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. He served five years on active duty and five years in the Reserve force as a Naval submarine officer. During a business career of twenty-six years with Procter and Gamble, he worked in manufacturing management before starting a business consulting company with other retirees. When he was asked to take on marine conservation projects, his life changed in a new direction. For nine years, he successfully led efforts to eliminate destructive gillnets from California, build artificial reefs, raise white seabass for release into the ocean, and wrote legislation beneficial to recreational anglers. After retiring for a second time, he began writing articles for fishing magazines and newspapers. He lectured at universities, participated in fishing seminars, did TV roundtable discussions and radio call in programs, and was a member of many fishing clubs including the Tuna Club of Avalon, the oldest saltwater fishing club in the country. Jim was honored with numerous fishing and conservation awards. After thirty-seven years living in southern California, Jim and his wife, Pat, moved cross country again near Jim's roots in the small town of Kingsland, Georgia located just north of Jacksonville, Florida.
