Jack Sanders is the pen name of a German crime author who takes his readers into the dark valleys of the Black Forest, to the quiet lakes of Schleswig-Holstein and out onto wind-swept North Sea islands – always with a clear view into the darker corners of the human soul. His path into regional crime fiction began with the series “Winter und Berg – Die Ermittler von Freudenstadt” (“Winter & Berg – The Investigators of Freudenstadt”). Chief Inspector Ben Winter and Detective Chief Inspector Lena Berg investigate complex cases in and around Freudenstadt and the Black Forest – from “Tödliches Menü” and “Tödliche Stille am Ellbachsee” to later novels like “Tödlicher Schwur auf dem Ritterturnier” and “Tödliche Fahrt”. These books blend classic police procedural work with emotional conflict, finely drawn characters and strong, vividly rendered settings. In the northern German “Seezeichen” series, Sanders changes the stage: around the town of Plön, Svea Johannsen & Fenja Stein reopen old missing person and murder cases. These cold cases unfold against the backdrop of the Holstein lake district and are known for their atmospheric density and psychologically grounded investigations. The series began with “Seezeichen – Vergessenes Ufer”, which is now also available as an audiobook, narrated by Fabian Muth. With “Ebbe & Schuld”, Jack Sanders shifts the perspective: on the North Sea islands of Juist and Amrum, it is no longer the detectives but the perpetrators who stand at the centre of the story. The books “Die Stille von Juist” and “In den Armen der Gezeiten” are stand-alone novels full of moral grey areas, inner darkness and the unique atmosphere of life on a small island – inspired by modern, psychologically driven thriller series. Another focus is the “Deister Crimes” series, featuring an investigative team in the Wennigser Mark near Hanover. The first novel, “Brandnarben”, combines mysterious crimes in the Deister hills with an intense team dynamic and the rough, brooding mood of this low mountain range. Sanders also explores more experimental formats beyond traditional novels: with “Weihnachtsraub in Freudenstadt – Ein Adventskalender-Krimi zum Lesen und Ausmalen” he created an interactive crime Advent calendar that offers 24 chapters of suspense along with atmospheric colouring illustrations – a literary companion for the run-up to Christmas. Whether in the Black Forest or by the Baltic and North Sea coasts, from the investigators’ point of view or that of the offenders, as a series novel or an Advent calendar – Jack Sanders stands for crime fiction and thrillers with atmosphere, emotional depth and characters that stay with you long after you turn the final page.
