Jon Stock, writing under the name J.S.Monroe, is the author of six psychological thrillers, including Find Me, which has been translated into 15 languages. His new thriller, His Final Patient, is published on 13 August. 'Brainy, twisty, inventive' , according to AJ Finn, author of the global bestseller, The Woman in the Window. Under his own name, Jon is the author of The Sleep Room, which was published in 2025 to critical acclaim in the UK (Little, Brown) and America (Abrams). He has also written five spy thrillers, including Dead Spy Running, which was optioned by Warner Bros as a feature film. His Final Patient (Head of Zeus/Bloomsbury) is about a psychiatrist who claims he can predict a patient's 'death day'. When he tells DI Silas Hart that he will die in five days' time, a chilling race against time ensues. 'His Final Patient is, remarkably, grounded in research at once fascinating and horrifying,' says AJ Finn. 'It is, in other words, a JS Monroe thriller. Monroe writes thrillers for grown-ups: readers who admire sharp writing, readers who savour complex characters -- characters like Silas Hart, one of the most appealing sleuths in contemporary crime fiction. The Hart novels are absorbing police procedurals that double as high-tension psychological thrillers (fans of Lisa Jewell, ready those nerves for jangling); but above all, they're mind-meddling, sleep-defying stories, the sort that remind you what real suspense feels like.' The Sleep Room, Jon's first non-fiction book, is an exposé of Dr William Sargant, one of the most controversial psychiatrists in post-war Britain. A global expert on brainwashing, he was head of the department of psychology at St Thomas' hospital in London from 1948 to 1972 and had close links to British and American intelligence services. It is currently in development as a TV series. ‘Compelling’ – Sunday Times ‘A gripping exposé’ – Financial Times ‘Lacerating‘ – Blake Morrison, Guardian Book of the Day No Place to Hide, Jon's previous J.S.Monroe thriller, was published in 2023. 'Clever, convincing and wickedly twisty – highly recommended,' according to Mick Herron. The Man On Hackpen Hill, the third J.S.Monroe thriller to feature DI Silas Hart (head of Swindon CID) and DS Strover, was published in the UK by Head of Zeus in 2021. 'Original and brilliantly plotted, with not so much a twist as a seismic shifting of the ground under your feet ... Amazing.' – Rosamund Lupton. The Other you (2020), the second DI Hart thriller, was published to widespread critical acclaim. 'Brilliantly original and intriguing ... Kept me hooked, enthralled and guessing to the very end' - Peter James. His second J.S.Monroe thriller, Forget My Name (2018), was the first to feature DI Hart. (It was published as The Last Thing She Remembers in the US.) 'An absorbing novel full of unexpected twists, topped by a savage climax' – The Times. Find Me (2017), the first J.S.Monroe thriller, has sold more than 150,000 copies and been translated into 14 languages. 'Intricately woven and heart-stoppingly believable, this has bestseller written all over it' – Clare Mackintosh; 'The most ingenious thriller you will read his year. I couldn’t put it down' –M.J.Arlidge. Jon lives in Wiltshire with his wife, Hilary Stock, a fine art photographer and is a vice chair of Marlborough LifFest. J.S.Monroe/Jon Stock is represented by Will Francis at Janklow & Nesbit. Film rights are repped by Emily Hayward-Whitlock at The Artists Partnership.
