When I was young, the goal was to get a good education and a job, stay, and retire. I remember when the calculator was invented, and we watched television on three national channels. There were no personal computers, no internet, and no cell phones. The world has changed significantly, and I have learned a lot. Looking back, I wish I had a mentor to guide me through the twists and turns of life’s path. I look at young people who, armed with a balanced life and a good decision-making process, can avoid many of life’s pitfalls. No one needs to be a student in the school of hard knocks. I remember a coworker who was observed to be smart. He replied that it was the result of his many mistakes that he had made. He was smart and honest with himself. Over time, one can develop skills for making better decisions. In a changing world, one can navigate by being true to oneself and can reach one's long-term life goals. I spent years observing people and the decisions they have made. Through my observations and experiences, I want to encourage young people to learn the skills that life is a gift worth living.
