Jacky Colliss Harvey read English at Cambridge, and History of Art at the Courtauld Institute. She is the author of the bestselling 'RED: A History of the Redhead', which has been praised as ‘fascinating and intriguing’ (Vogue); as ‘witty, comprehensive and thoroughly enjoyable’ (Booklist Online), ‘light-hearted but erudite’ (Washington Post) and as ‘accomplishing the sought-after end of achieving universality from specificity’ (Elle Magazine). RED has been published in the US, UK, Korea, Poland and Holland. It was followed by 'My Life As A Redhead, A Guided Journal', and 'The Animal’s Companion', a cultural history of the pet-owner (Spring 2019), which was published by Black Dog & Leventhal (now Hachette) in the US, by Allen & Unwin in the UK, Knesebeck in Germany and Eulyoo in Korea. The Sunday Times described it as a ‘lively exploration’; and the Irish Times as ‘engaging and insightful - teaching us a vast amount about animals, and even more about ourselves’; and by the Glasgow Herald as ‘both erudite and entertaining.’ Her interest in the history of London and in the 17th-century led her to write 'Walking Pepys's London' (2022) for the Haus Armchair Traveller series, which was praised by The Sunday Times as showing 'an eye for surprising details and a lovely way with description', and by the TLS as 'as good a book of its kind as one could hope for.' Her forthcoming non-fiction title 'Thoughtlands' (April 2026) is an exploration of the links between writing and walking as they can be tracked across the landscape and the history of Suffolk - her birthplace. Colliss Harvey worked in museum publishing for twenty years, first at the National Portrait Gallery and then at the Royal Collection Trust, where she set up the Trust’s first commercial publishing programme. She has also worked as a movie extra, and as a life-model. As J. C. Harvey, she has written four titles in the historical fiction 'Fiskardo's War' series - all set against the Thirty Years War (1618-48) and the First English Civil War of 1642-46. 'The Silver Wolf' (2022) was longlisted for the Historical Writers Association Debut Award, and was followed by 'The Dead Men', (2023) the novella 'Peace and Love' (2023) and 'The Wanton Road' (2025).
