Joanne Soper-Cook/J.S. Cook is a Newfoundland author whose fiction explores crime, psychological darkness, and the fragile borders between memory and identity. Her work has appeared in Land, Sea, and Time, a provincial high-school literature textbook, and she has published scholarly essays in Essays on Canadian Writing. Her short fiction has also been included in Weather’s Edge, a contemporary Newfoundland anthology.
She is the author of 35 novels, including the Kildevil Cove crime series (Dark Water, Dark Mire, Dark Tide, Dark Souls, and Dark Vows); the historical noir duology Oasis of Night and Valley of the Dead; and the Inspector Raft trilogy, a Victorian forensic mystery series known for its visceral detail, moral ambiguity, and atmospheric blend of medicine, monstrosity, and old-world brutality.
Her writing is recognized for its atmospheric precision, psychological depth, and emotionally complex characters. She brings a dual background in creative work and critical scholarship to all her fiction.
A former editor with Dreamspinner Press, she now teaches at the College of the North Atlantic in St. John’s and is currently developing a new crime series featuring Inspecteur Blaise Pascal and Louis Prudhomme of the Sûreté du Québec.
