He noticed it early—the way people reveal more than they intend, often without realizing it.
It started in classrooms, where small shifts in tone mattered more than the lesson itself. Later, in hallways, offices, and entire school systems, the pattern held. Decisions were made in one place and settled somewhere else. What was written down often mattered less than how it came to be written.
J. Jasper North spent more than fifty years in education, working in both public and private schools as a teacher, principal, superintendent, and university instructor and administrator. The roles changed. The scale changed. The behavior did not.
He learned to watch for what didn’t quite align.
A careful observer of human behavior, he became interested not in what was obvious, but in what resisted explanation—the small inconsistencies, the quiet adjustments, the things that held together just well enough to avoid being questioned. He also came to believe that people should be able to experience the full richness of life, even when the systems around them made that difficult.
After retiring, he began to write.
It felt less like starting something new than continuing something already in motion.
His stories follow the same patterns he spent a lifetime noticing—truth revealed not by force, but by attention. In the world of Penrose, nothing is truly hidden. It is simply arranged.
He lives in a small town in Southwest Washington with his wife, where they share their lives and work with their children and move easily between the mountains, river gorges, forests, and the nearby ocean. It is a place where things appear settled, even when they are not.
There are also four cats.
They move quietly. They observe without comment. They involve themselves when it suits them.
He has found this to be a useful model.
Because once something is noticed—
it cannot return to what it was.
