An Unangan (Aleut), Ilarion speaks in venues where he is invited. He was the first Alaska Native Commissioner of Commerce and Economic Development (a cabinet post in state govt.), co-founder of many Alaskan organizations, and has won several awards throughout his career. He focuses now on getting the messages out from Indigenous Elders from throughout the world about what we need to do during this times of daunting challenges. Ilarion (Larry) Merculieff co-authored Indigenous Ways of Teaching and Learning and Difficult Dialogues published by the University of Alaska Anchorage.
