Dr. Ilana Horwitz is an award-winning sociologist who writes about how social class, religion and gender shape American life. She is a professor at Tulane University, where she holds the Fields-Rayant Chair in Contemporary Jewish Life. Before coming to New Orleans, she spent a decade at Stanford University, where she earned her PhD. Her first book, God, Grades, and Graduation: Religion's Surprising Impact on Academic Success (Oxford University Press), won the Distinguished Book Award from the American Sociological Association's Section on Sociology of Religion and was reviewed in The Wall Street Journal. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Forward, and Inside Higher Ed. She lives in New Orleans
