Hideo Nagayoshi is a nonfiction writer, editor, and cultural producer based in Japan. He serves as Vice Representative Director of Clear Light, a voluntary organization examining cannabis issues, and is the producer of the Tokyo International Cannabis Film Festival. While studying at university, he began working as a stage producer, traveling throughout Japan and abroad with folk music, dance, and rock performances. During this period, he started writing and made his debut in 1999 with Mystical Travel Guide: Journey Through the Unknown (Daiwa Publishing). Since then, he has written and lectured extensively on themes such as cannabis, drugs, altered states of consciousness, spirituality, and street culture. Through fieldwork in Jamaica, India, New York, Tuvalu, and other regions, Nagayoshi draws on firsthand cultural research to explore the intersections of cannabis, spirituality, urban life, and nature. He has also contributed his expertise to fictional works; notably, he served as a research collaborator on the manga series Tokyo Cannabis Special Zone: The Man Called the Cannabis King, providing guidance on narrative structure, character development, and cannabis-related knowledge across all ten volumes. Deeply knowledgeable about cannabis, he has advocated for legal reform since the 1980s while continuing to explore the plant’s potential for environmental restoration and community regeneration. His major works include A New Introduction to Cannabis (Gentosha), Cannabis: A Forbidden History and the Future of Medicine (Cosmic Publishing), Let’s Stop the Lies and Silence: Rethinking Medical Cannabis (co-authored), The Dignity of Drugs, Why Are People Arrested for Cannabis?, and Is Cannabis Use a Crime? Cannabis Policy and Diversity, among others.
