Hi, I’m Helen Pearson, a journalist and editor for Nature, the world’s leading science journal. I’ve been reporting, editing and writing about science for over 20 years, and in 2025 was named European Science Journalist of the Year. During my time at Nature, I’ve reported on stories ranging from gene editing to science advice to artificial intelligence and I've worked from London and New York. I also led the journalism and opinion team at Nature for five years, for which I won Editor of the Year at the Association of British Science Writers awards in 2022. Now I mostly write feature stories, and I teach science writing and journalism at University College London. My first book, The Life Project (2016), was named best science book of the year by The Observer, was a book of the year for The Economist and was longlisted for the Orwell Prize. My second book — Beyond Belief: How Evidence Shows What Really Works (2026) — tells the story of the global movement championing the idea that evidence from research should guide our decisions. I started out studying natural sciences at Cambridge and then did a PhD in genetics at the University of Edinburgh, before switching into science communication and writing.
